How a Muslimah Reconciles Between Her Commitment to Her Home and Her Dedication to Seeking Knowledge

 Question:

If a female seeker of knowledge studies in the masjid, she needs to review what she has learned while at the masjid when she returns home, and this takes considerable time. However, she understands that needed work in her home awaits her, as she needs to assist her mother in the home. The affairs of her home take all of her time and seeking knowledge needs full dedication from her. So if she is occupied in her home, she is not able to acquire a great deal of knowledge. How can we reconcile between her commitment to her home and her dedication to seeking knowledge?

Answer:

If she is able to avoid some of the worldly activities that she has to do, then I advise her to do so. If it is not possible to do that, then she should organize her time and give a significant part of it towards seeking knowledge, and then a part toward her worldly activities. It is not possible for anyone to acquire knowledge unless worldly matters are placed secondary to knowledge. As for the case where knowledge is made secondary in importance to the worldly matters, then it will not be acquired. And we ask Allaah to assist us. ¹
