Three Important Ways to Benefit from the Qur’aan In Ramadhaan

The Sheikh Muhammad Baazmool, may Allaah preserve him, was asked,1

Question:

How can I benefit from my recitation of the Holy Qur’aan in Ramadhaan?

Answer:

You can benefit, if Allaah so wills, from your recitation of the Noble Qur’aan if you purify your intention when doing so, and be diligent that you recite the Qur’aan just as the Messenger of Allaah, may Allaah’s praise and salutations be upon him and his family, used to recite it.Allaah will open and facilitate for you properly understanding the Qur’aan and grasping it through the following things.

First: That you clear your heart from the two filths of associating other in worship of Allaah and that of committing wrongdoing and sins. As certainly, the Qur’aan is not touched”except by those who are physically and figuratively clean. No heart will gain comprehension and understand the meaning of the Qur’aan while still having within it the filth of transgressing by worshiping others besides Allaah or the filth of committing wrongdoing and sins. Just as it is known that the angels do not enter any house in which there is a dog or an image of a living thing, in the same way the understanding of the Qur’aan will not enter the heart, which contains the dog of desires or the images of our whims and opinions.

Secondly, that you give true importance to reading to comprehend the Qur’aan with a truly correct understanding. Either by reading those shorter summarized books of explanation of the Qur’aan such as Tafseer al-Baghawee, or Tafseer Ibn Katheer, or works such as Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahman by Sheikh Ibn Sa’dee who was from the later modern scholars who wrote explanations of the Qur’aan. As certainly, the way to a sound contemplation of the Qur’aan is reached by studying its explained meanings.

Thirdly, that when you recite the Qur’aan make sure your objective and aim is not simply to reach the end of the surah and complete it. Whenever a verse contains a call with the phrase {O you who believe} stop and review what it is drawing your attention towards. Look at it closely with your heart and your mind and intellect. Either it is calling you to a good and commanding you with it, or it is warning you from a evil matter which is prohibited for you.

Some of our scholars when they recite the Qur’aan they often have with them a small notebook which they note down meanings and benefits about the correct understandings of the Qur’aan that Allaah blesses them with during their reading. Or to write down any questions that come to mind during reading, so they can later search for answers in the books of explanation of the Qur’aan after they have completed their reading. This is incredibly beneficial.

Lastly, that a Muslim frequently asks and supplicates to Allaah to bless him with understanding of the Qur’aan and that He enables him to comprehend it. And that he often asks Allaah to make him someone who acts according to the knowledge he is blessed with. As the one who also acts according to what he has learned, by Allaah’s favor, is then granted knowledge which he did not previously possess. And the success is from Allaah alone.
